Joseph Mercer

May 15, 1936 — September 6, 2025

Joseph Mercer, a beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather and patriot, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on May 15, 1936, in Chadbourn, North Carolina, to parents Leon and Mary (Benton) Mercer. Joseph took great pride in his upbringing and his North Carolina roots.

Joseph served in the U.S. Army during the John F. Kennedy administration, where he was Army Special Forces. While he was not one to speak much about his service, he often lightened the mood with humor, joking, "I can't tell you where I served or I would have to kill you!" His courage and quick thinking were highlighted during his military career when he saved two men, who remained forever grateful to him for his bravery. After the military, Joseph dedicated over 43 years of his life as the owner and operator of Suwannee River Break & Tire.

A man of faith, Joseph loved God with all his heart and served Him daily. His devotion was evident in every aspect of his life, guiding him through challenges and triumphs alike.

Joseph Mercer leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and strength that will be remembered by all whose lives he touched. His spirit will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Lucile Colson Mercer, whom he loved with all his heart; his three siblings, Pearl Norris, Margaret Fassett, and one brother, J. C Mercer.

Joseph is survived by two children, Ricky Delane Mercer (Anne Marie) and Jacqueline Mercer Starling; his sister, Irene McCrackin; grandchildren, Kenneth Delane Starling, Jarred Andrew Starling (Sher), Devin Matthew Starling, Collin Randall Starling (Eliza), Lydia Maryanne Starling, Jennifer Marie Ebert, Stephanie Marie Gregor (Michal), Nicholas Anthony Delane Mercer; great grandchildren, Emily Marie Ebert, Mariah Sue Ebert, Chloe Elizabeth Gregor, Ava Grace Ebert, Daniel John Ebert, and Lily Elizabeth Gregor; close extended family, Randy Starling, Dick Starling, Joseph Miano, and many nephews, nieces, and cousins.
