Joseph Grinnell Campbell, 84, of Alachua, Florida, passed away peacefully at his home on February 13, 2026.
He was born in Cedar Key, Florida, to Earl Campbell and Geneva Turner of Chiefland. At the age of 13, Joseph moved to Chiefland, where he later graduated from Chiefland High School in 1959.
Grinnell proudly served as a firefighter with the City of Gainesville and retired in 1989 after years of dedicated service to his community. Even after retirement, he remained a hardworking man, continuing to farm and staying active throughout his life. He also traveled extensively and was a longtime member of several antique motor clubs, where he was known for his vast knowledge and passion for antique engines and machinery.
He especially loved hunting with his son, Joe, in Georgia — time spent together that became treasured memories.
Grinnell was married to his beloved wife, Joann Bryant Campbell, for 65 years. Together they built a strong and loving family. He is survived by his wife, Joann; his daughter, Genell L. Campbell of Gainesville, Florida; and his son, Joseph Grinnell Campbell, Jr. of Alachua, Florida.
His siblings: Earlene Crews (Buddy) both deceased of Chiefland; Bonnie Cleland (Robbie) of Rincon, Georgia; Donald Edwin Campbell (Jane) of Alachua, Florida; and Oz Barker deceased (Lori) of Chiefland, Florida.
Grinnell was blessed with six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved dearly.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, February 20, at 11:00 a.m. at Bethel Baptist Cemetery, officiated by Andy Cook. Music by, Nicholas Messina.
Grinnell will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his strong work ethic, and his lifelong passion for farming, service, and fellowship. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished.
